Hold onto your hearts! This week’s photo shows my original six chickens eating their first watermelon ever on Independence Day, the Fourth Of July! It’s also the day Bessie got her name, or her “original” name, before it was changed.
The story of her name is what happened before this. It was one of those big summertime cumulus cloud afternoons. Good for a nice nap while whatever showers came our way poured down. We would have fresh watermelon after it was over.
I was awakened from my nap by the noise of wind blowing rather than rain on my metal roof like I was expecting. Suddenly I was alarmed and bolted up. When I looked outside, the wind hadn’t brought any rain, but it had blown over the end barrier on their chicken run. There were no chickens inside!
Hopefully you are seeing the irony of this being on Independence Day!
I put on my shoes, rushed outside, and counted six chickens, all safe and looking at me like I had lost my mind. I grabbed the first thing I could find, a rake, and frantically tried to herd them back inside. All I could think was, “I’m sure the neighbors are just loving this!”
Helpful Hint: You can’t herd chickens, but you can look extremely ridiculous. (I learned later you should actually just stay calm, act like it’s no big thing, and then attract them with a favorite treat.)
Bessie was the last one to get back into their run, and it took the longest time with the most coaxing and begging. She finally went in all by herself, probably more to get away from her bizarre Chicken Daddy than anything else!
Since it was Independence Day, it just seemed good and proper to name my most independent girl “Betsy” after Betsy Ross from American Revolutionary War fame. After a few days, it was changed to “Bessie” because that’s just a little easier to say especially as “Miss Bessie.”
Following our big adventure, we all enjoyed our cool-down, calm-down watermelon treat that holiday afternoon. We all definitely needed it!
